In Jodhpur, a locality near Rajaram Circle in the Soor Sagar area experienced communal violence on Friday night, resulting in two policemen being injured by stone-pelting, a shop being set on fire, and two vehicles being damaged, according to a PTI report.
The conflict started over the construction of a gate behind an eidgah in Jodhpur, which sparked resistance from local residents. Jodhpur West Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Kumar Yadav noted that police responded by dispersing the crowd using batons and firing 4-5 rounds of tear gas shells. While the situation was brought under control late Friday night, the tension persisted, leading to the deployment of heavy police and Rajasthan Armed Constabulary forces on Saturday morning.
Police Commissioner Rajendra Singh mentioned that two FIRs were filed based on complaints from both sides involved in the clashes. Authorities detained individuals from both groups and are actively conducting raids to apprehend additional suspects.
The unrest began when local opposition to the construction of the wall behind the eidgah escalated into violence, with incidents of stone-pelting, arson, and vandalism. As police arrived, they were met with stone-pelting, temporarily halting their progress. During the chaos, a tractor was set ablaze, and another vehicle was damaged.
Efforts to restore peace included negotiations led by senior community leaders and police. However, these efforts were undermined by sudden renewed stone-pelting, which intensified the tensions once again. Police continue to raid homes in the area to detain those involved in the violence.
