Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Falls Short of Majority in 2024 Elections as INDIA Bloc Shows Strong Performance; NDA and Opposition Scramble for Support

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell short of the majority mark of 272, securing only 240 seats, in a surprisingly narrow outcome of the 2024 general elections. The final results, declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday, showed the INDIA bloc winning 232 seats, with the Congress party alone securing 99.

This election result was a stark contrast to the BJP’s previous performances, where it secured 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014, both times achieving a majority on its own. Despite this setback, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to form a government at the Centre for a third consecutive term. The BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fell short of expectations, facing significant losses in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.

In this scenario, two NDA allies, Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), have emerged as crucial players. Although both contested the general election in alliance with the BJP, leaders from the INDIA bloc have reached out to these coalition-era veterans in an attempt to woo them into the Opposition bloc. To achieve a majority, the INDIA bloc needs the support of both JDU and TDP, as well as a few unaligned MPs. Thus, the possibility of the BJP being unable to form the government remains open, and the situation is highly fluid.

Following the election results, leaders from both the NDA and INDIA alliances are converging in Delhi to discuss the way forward. Nitish Kumar is also en route to Delhi. Meanwhile, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu announced his plans to hold meetings in Delhi shortly.

KC Tyagi, a close aide of Nitish Kumar and a JDU leader, told news agency ANI yesterday that the party will stay in the NDA, rejecting any speculation about switching to the INDIA bloc. Similarly, Naidu congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the NDA’s performance in Andhra Pradesh and expressed his commitment to rebuilding the state in partnership with the BJP.
